The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) recently shared an update about acquiring 12,7088 acres of land for US $1 million to start the expansion of one of the main cemeteries on the island, the Bath Cemetery.
Premier of Nevis and Minister of Finance, Mark Brantley said during one of his press conferences that the administration purchased the land in 2020 at Bath Plain. He also stated that the purchased land had an old, abandoned property but the place is sufficient to expand the Bath Cemetery.
Notably, the cost of the land is around US $78,685 per acre, which is about EC $5 per square foot.
Reason for expanding the cemetery
Premier Brantley further said that it is one of the main cemeteries on the island and the administration. He said that after receiving a message that the space at the cemetery was running-out.
They decided to approach the land owner, Ursula Huggins-Whitney, who did not want to sell just a part of the property, so they had to buy the entire land. The purchased land starts from the Bath Cemetery, up the hill, and into the Bath Plain itself.
Premier Mark Brantley said that they will first work on the area that cascades down the hill and prepare it for the expansion of the cemetery. After the expansion, they will decide what to do with the lands on top of the hill.

Premier Brantley highlighted that the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM)-led NIA will continue to work with transparency and accountability, ensuring responsible governance and open communication with the people of Nevis.
He further explained that it is his job as the Premier of Nevis to provide clarification and accurate facts about the misinformation regarding the purchased land which is spreading across the island.
