Prime Minister and Minister of National Security Dr Terrance Drew recently met the Director of the Inter American Defense College (IADC), Major General Richard Heitkamp. The two delegates discussed ways to collaborate in the future and to strengthen security cooperation, education, and capacity building efforts in St Kitts and Nevis.
The meeting was also attended by Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Denzil Douglas, Minister of Agriculture Samal Duggins, United States Navy Captain Rick Ursery, St Kitts and Nevis Ambassador to the United States of America Jacinth Henry-Martin, and various other senior national security officials and senior officers in the Ministry of Information Communication and Technology (ICT).
Major General Richard Heitkamp’s visit is important in strengthening the Federation’s security framework and improving cooperation with international partners.
Meeting with PM Drew
PM Dr Terrance Drew and Major General Richard Heitkamp discussed the importance of providing timely solutions to crime within CARICOM states. During the meeting, PM Drew said that their strategies for a stronger approach to security in St Kitts and Nevis includes addressing food security, health security, citizen security, and economic security.
He also highlighted their success in reducing crime in the twin island nation and the launch of better law enforcement technologies. PM Drew also discussed the San Jose Agreement which aims at fighting transnational criminal activities.
In addition, Major General Richard Heitkamp underscored their ability to build capacity within the security sector of St Kitts and Nevis. He also presented an overview of the educational and training programs that are offered by the IADC.
One of the main topics discussed during the meeting was a fully funded scholarship for a master’s program at the IADC. Notably, this scholarship is in line to strengthen the security of the twin island nation through education and professional development.
Meeting with Minister Dr Denzil Douglas and Minister Samal Duggins
Foreign Minister Dr Denzil Douglas also engaged in follow-up meetings to advance diplomatic and security cooperation, and crime prevention initiatives between St Kitts and Nevis, Guatemala, and Taiwan.
Minister Samal Duggins also interacted with Major General Richard Heitkamp during the meeting and focused on knowledge transfer initiatives, postgraduate education, and specialized training.
