Stating that cancer could become the commonest cause of a serious chronic illness in St Kitts and Nevis, Political Leader of the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), the Rt Hon Dr Denzil L Douglas announced Tuesday night that the NextGen Labour administration, shall vigorously pursue a National Cancer Control Policy.
“This will deal very comprehensively as a policy, with systematically tackling the causes and consequences of cancer at all levels from prevention to treatment with possible cure and or palliative treatment as well so that the quality of life can be enjoyed at the highest level,” he told listeners to his weekly radio call-in programme “Ask the Leader” on Kyss 102.5 FM.
Dr Douglas, who was among hundreds of persons giving support to the last Saturday’s Essence of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation Annual Health Walk and all other organization locally that are pursuing an agenda and programme of dealing with the scourge of cancer that is wreaking havoc not only in the world but also here in St Kitts and Nevis.
He hoped that the technology and science will speed up the necessary research that will find a cure for the scourge that afflicts mankind.
Dr Douglas noted that cancer will emerge in the next year and years to come, unless it goes unchecked, the commonest cause of death among our people.”
Dr Douglas said it was heartbreaking to hear recently of a young lady stricken with cancer and who having paid the requested financial deposit at the J N France General Hospital to hear when she went for treatment to be told the medication was not immediately available.
“This demonstrates the inability of a government to deal with one of the most pressing chronic illnesses that afflicts our young people and our people generally. I speaks of the inefficiency of an administration at its highest level. It speaks of a lack of care and concern for our people by an administration that has become totally engaged with regard to looking after itself and its members of government rather than looking after the affairs of the people of St Kitts and Nevis,” said Dr Douglas.
He announced that his monthly health walk in his constituency this coming Saturday is dedicated to all persons who are afflicted with cancer.
