St Kitts and Nevis commemorates CARICOM DAY announces July 4 as National Holiday, Image Courtesy: Facebook

The government of St Kitts and Nevis has announced a public holiday on the occasion of CARICOM Day. The government has directed all the public and private offices within the federation to observe July 4 as CARICOM Day. This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Accordingly, the Forty-Fourth (44th) Regular Meeting of the CARICOM Heads of Government in The Bahamas declared a national holiday on July 4.

All the member states of the Caribbean Community are expected to annually celebrate the anniversary of CARICOM in the form of a public holiday. The CARICOM, or the Caribbean Community, have been functioning for the last five decades for the benefit of the Caribbean Community. The team of the CARICOM will celebrate the golden jubilee under the theme: ’50 Years Strong: A Solid Foundation to Build on.

The CARICOM was formed after the four founding members, Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana, and Trinidad & Tobago, signed the Treaty of Chaguaramas. The Caribbean Community came into existence officially on August 1, 1973. The members of the Caribbean Community are Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat (a British overseas territory in the Leeward Islands), St Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago.

The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, will deliver remarks to commemorate the celebration of the Caribbean Community’s 50th anniversary. The signing authorities on the treaty of Chaguaramas were: Prime Ministers Errol Barrow of Barbados, Forbes Burnham of Guyana, Michael Manley of Jamaica, and Eric Williams of Trinidad and Tobago.

The main events of the celebration will take place in the Caribbean Community’s birthplace at, Trinidad and Tobago. The events will take place on July 3 and July 4. At the same time, the country will play host to the leaders of the member states for the 45th Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government will be held.
