Agricultural Science enrolled students at the Charles E Mills Secondary School of Constituency 6 in St Kitts and Nevis paid a visit to the Plant Propagation Unit at the Department of Agriculture, St. Kitts, on Thursday, 11th May 2023. The Ministry of Agriculture in the government of St Kitts and Nevis took to its social media to share an update on the excursion. The Ministry also shared some images from the activity.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the purpose of the visit was to provide a practical experience that would help develop the knowledge and skills of the students pursuing secondary-level science and technology, principles and practices of agriculture studies.
The official social media page of the ministry of agriculture stated that During the visit, Agronomist at the Department of Agriculture, Bronte Tucker, facilitated the hands-on learning session. During this session, the students of the Charles E Mills secondary school got the opportunity to be introduced to the different methods of plant propagation.
During the excursion, the students got the opportunity to learn about the the importance of plant propagation in Agri-Business. Additionally, the Department of Agriculture gave them the opportunity to explore the various propagation techniques through on-site demonstrations.
Propagation Technician Keifer Kelly assisted by showing the students the step-by-step methods of grafting, air layering, root cuttings, budding and seed scarification.
The Plant Propagation lesson wrapped up with a comprehensive demonstration of how to use propagation tools like budding tape and knife, pruners, grafting clips, aluminum foil and plastic wraps to perform the scientific procedures successfully.
The ministry of agriculture in the government of St Kitts and Nevis has taken several initiatives to introduce newer and better facilities and programmes to the sector. They regularly introduce the stakeholders of the sectors to new innovations that have come about. The excursion of the students also falls under the same catagory. Through this initiative, the gobernemnt hopes to introduce the students to the various new innovations early in their life.
Through this, they seek to make the future of the sector secure.
