Marcella Liburd JP was sworn in as the new Governor-General of St Kitts and Nevis on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at 11:50 PM at Government House, Springfield, Basseterre, St. Kitts. Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis., Dr Terrance Drew shared the update of the swearing in ceremony on his social media post. The appointment of the new governor-general is historically significant for St Kitts and Nevis as this is the first time that a female candidate has filled the position of the Governor-General.
Marcella Liburd will succeed S W Tapley Seaton. Seaton was not present at his successor’s swearing-in ceremony. However, he sent in his regrets for his absence at the ceremony. At the same time, he extended his best wishes to the new governor-general for a successful tenure in the office.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew, marked his attendance at the swearing-in ceremony of the first female governor-general of St Kitts and Nevis, Marcella Liburd. Along with him, the Prime Minister’s Cabinet members, Speaker of the national assembly Lanien Blanchette, Resident High Court Judge Tamara Gill, Cabinet Secretary Marcus Natta, and Head of Civil Services Thelma Richard were also in attendance at the event. The members of the Cabinet included:
- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, social development et al., Geoffrey Hanley
- Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Services et al. Dr Denzil Douglas
- Minister of Public Utilities, Konris Maynard
- Minister of Creative Economy, Agriculture et al., Samal Duggins
- Attorney General and Minister of Justice & Legal Affairs Garth Wilkin
- Senator with Ministerial responsibility for sustainable development, constituency empowerment, environment, et al., Joyelle Clarke
- Senator and Junior Minister with responsibility for Gender Affairs, Social Development et al., Isalean Phillip
Before she was appointed the fifth Governor General of St Kitts and Nevis, Marcella Liburd served the federation in various capacities as a teacher, lawyer, Senator, Deputy Speaker and Speaker of the National Assembly. She also served as the Cabinet Minister of the Federal Government under the Prime Ministership of Dr Denzil Douglas.
