Senator Dr Joyelle Clarke attended the COP27 as a part of the delegation accompanying Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Denzil Douglas. Minister Clarke handles the responsibility for the Environment, Climate Action and Constituency Empowerment ministries.
While at the event, Senator Clarke delivered the National Statement on behalf of the Government of St Kitts and Nevis. She gave the address on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, during the Plenary Session, at the COP27, Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
Her address was focused on the difficulties faced by SIDS due to the devastating effects of climate change.
During her address at COP27, Minister Clarke also advocated for The Republic of China (Taiwan) to be included in COP as observers.
According to Joyelle Clarke, The republic of China has held dialogues with several nations to reduce emissions. The country is working tirelessly to fight the devastation caused by Climate change.
In her speech, Senator Clarke stated that she was honoured to join the presidents, ministers, and excellencies in attendance at the event. She called the COP27 the most critical and prominent stage for climate action.
Further, Senator Joyelle Clarke said that her nation, St Kitts and Nevis, advocates for the plight of the small island developing states (SIDS) to support transparent, robust, actionable pathways to address climate change impacts on lives and livelihoods.
Minister Clarke stated that several nations across the globe do not have enough financial resources or human capital to realize the devastating effects of climate change. However, in the same breath, she added that no nation in this world could escape the catastrophic impacts of climate change.
In her address, the minister responsible for Environment, Climate Action and Constituency Empowerment addressed her country’s situation and talked about reaching a solution.
She urged the attendants of the COP27 to consider and acknowledge that several nations do not have the economy or fiscal capability to support the rebuilding programmes required to recover from climate-related calamities.
Senator Joyelle Clarke revealed that St Kitts and Nevis aims to become a sustainable island state. The energies of the nation are currently focused on harnessing geothermal power.
She also revealed that the longest-standing diplomatic allies of St Kitts and Nevis, The Republic of China (Taiwan), have helped the federation move in that path.
