The Attorney General of St Kitts and Nevis and the Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, Garth Wilkin has received information regarding certain defamatory stories circulating on social media. These stories are being distributed via WhatsApp, and the Attorney General took to his social media to refute the claims in these posts and stories.
He announced through his social media that he wants to categorically report that the defamatory stories which are doing rounds on WhatsApp and posted on fictitious Facebook accounts are lies and falsehoods. He also informed the people that social media trolls post fictional stories under pseudonyms.
Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs further noted that he intends to protect his personal and professional reputation from the people spreading stories about him. According to him, these forces can not differentiate between fact and fiction. They are hardly concerned about the truth.
Further, AG Garth Wilkin shared that on January 12, 2023, Attorneys acting on behalf of the Minister of Justice and legal affairs applied for and obtained an ex parte injunction. This injunction will prevent Ian Patches Liburd and other people acting on his behalf from repeating such defamatory stories. Ian patches Liburd attempted to do the same on his social media show which they intended to do tonight.
Garth Wilkin announced on his social media that he wants to pursue this matter to its conclusion. Further, he instructed his attorneys to file a claim in the High Court to seek aggravated and compensatory damages for defamation. These damages come concerning the recent incidents and the other defamatory statements that Ian Patches Liburd made about AG Garth Wilkin over the past few months.
He explained that currently, Ian Patches Liburd is the only defendant. However, he is reviewing other posts that have been brought to his attention. Attorney General Garth Wilkin stated that he would not hesitate to add any others who have circulated or published these lies as defendants.
