The Premier of Nevis has announced that they are beginning the payment of landowners in the area designated for the expansion of the Vance W Amory International Airport. The payments will start during this week and clear the way for the beginning of the project.
The Premier of Nevis made this announcement during the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) town hall meeting for the parish of St. Paul’s. The Premier of Nevis also highlighted that he was grateful for the support of the community and thanked landowners for their patience.
During the Town Hall Meeting, Premier Brantley announced that the last time the Vance W Amory International Airport underwent such a large-scale upgrade was nearly two decades ago. This is a massive gap between upgrades and the travellers of Nevis are currently relying on the RLB International Airport in St Kitts.
The Premier said that he does not believe there is anything wrong with using the RLB International Airport for arrivals. At the same time, Minister of Tourism, Mark Brantley wants to secure direct air access to Nevis for the travellers.
The importance of developing and upgrading the airport is apparent in the fact that with better facilities at the Vance W Amory International Airport will help get more tourism footfall. Further, the project will help drive the economy of the Nevis Island and will help businesses grow.
The securing of the land for the expansion project was the primary aspect causing the delay in the launch of the project. The infrastructure upgrade is being funded with the help of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank.
The NIA has recieved the funds from the bank and will be starting the handover of cheques to the landowners who have agreed to give up their property for Vance W. Amory International Airport expansion project.
The Premier of Nevis and Minister of Tourism in the NIA shared the details of the upgrades that the Vance W Amory International Airport will be undergoing. The project will include expanding the airport into a larger, modern, first-class facility with expanded runways on the west and the east ends and new lighting systems.
Further, the project will include the construction of a fuel farm and aircraft hangar, a new fire hall, upgraded terminal building and much more. The upgraded facility is expected to support the arrival of international from several destinations.
