The St Kitts and Nevis Ministry of Environment and Climate Action is gearing up to attend the 9th Our Ocean Conference. The event is being hosted in Athens Greece starting from April 15 to April 17, 2024.
The Ministry of Agriculture will also be attending the conference alongside the Ministry of Environment. The event will have attendants from several coastal countries across the globe. St Kitts and Nevis’s participation in the Our Ocean Conference is being facilitated by the Republic of China (Taiwan).
The officials have shared that the representatives of the Republic of China (Taiwan) facilitated the handover of a cheque. Ivan Chen, Counsellor of The Embassy of the Republic of China was responsible for the handover.
The handover of the cheque was attended by the representatives from Ministry of environment et al and the Ministry of Agriculture. Minister Joyelle Clarke shared some glimpses from the handover ceremony.
She also thanked the Republic of China (Taiwan) for their generous help which would allow the representatives of St Kitts and Nevis to be present at the 9th Our Ocean Conference. Taiwan has been a steady partner of the twin island federation for over four decades.
The country has helped St Kitts and Nevis in getting their voice heard across the globe. Through the assistance received from Republic of China (Taiwan), the federation has emerged as a vocal advocate of climate action.
As per the organizers of the 9th edition of the international Our Ocean conference, the event will reiterate Greece’s commitment to develop their blue economy. The officials have shared that the conference will focus on improving the health of seas and the ocean.
The Ministry of Environment, et al noted that the marine ecosystems are now threatened by unsustainable human practices. These human practices include, wastewater and marine litter.
The ministry noted that as an island, we also grapple with several issues, including unregulated and unreported fishing unsustainable shipping and tourism activities.
At the event, St Kitts and Nevis will focus on four main pillars:
▪️Sustainable Tourism in coastal areas and islands
▪️Green Shipping
▪️Plastic and Microplastic Pollution
▪️The Green transition in the Mediterranean Sea
