The Director of the National Hurricane Centre (NHC), Michael Brennan urged the people to be prepared for this season as Beryl becomes the Atlantic’s earliest Category 5 hurricane on record.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew in his National Statement, in June 2024, commemorated the start of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season highlighting the severity of the 2024 season, as predicted by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Now that one of the most active hurricanes is being faced by the people of Caribbean, the people have been urged to ensure that some emergency preparedness plans are in place for the hurricane season.
Prime Minister Drew in his statement asked the people to ensure that there is an emergency plan in place, and by any chance if there is not, contact the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for guidance and assistance.
He also tells to stock up on essential supplies, ensure that the property is secured and insured, and stay informed through reliable sources of weather updates.
Along with this, there are several tips that the people can use ensuring their safety during the Hurricane Season. The list of some basic yet important tips are given down below:
–Stay at Home Kit: Stock two weeks of supplies that include food, water, and medicines in large quantities (stores and pharmacies will be closed).
–Organize a Go-Kit: Gather supplies for at-least a week that you can carry with yourself that include backup batteries and chargers for your main devices (mobiles, wheelchair, etc.).
-Keep the personal, financial, and medical records safe.
–Stay connected and informed: Have a battery powered radio or a device that keep you updated on the weather forecasts.
–Learn Emergency Skills: Learn First Aid and CPR, for any kind of situation that can occur at the time of the calamity.
-Learn how to use a generator safely.
–Avoid drinking tap water until local officials say that it is safe.
Beryl has become the earliest major hurricanes, ushering in a troubling start to a hurricane season that forecasters have warned will be hyperactive.
The National Weather Service forecasters also predict 17 to 25 named storms this season, with as many as 13 of those becoming hurricanes.
All the interests around the Caribbean Sea, including Jamaica, the Cayman Islands to the Yucatan Peninsula, have been asked monitor the forecast of Beryl closely over the next several days and have their hurricane plans ready to go.
