Minister of Energy in St Kitts and Nevis Federal Cabinet, Konris Maynard chaired the Third Meeting of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Council of Ministers: Energy. The meeting was held at the Marriott Resort from February 4th, 2025 to February 5th, 2025, and promoted the OECS Sustainable Energy Roadmap 2025-2035.
The meeting focused on creating a strategic plan to improve economic growth through sustainable energy across OECS territories over the next decade. The OECS territories include Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Martinique, and Guadeloupe.
Theme of the meeting
This meeting was held under the theme ‘ Sustainable Energy: Creating Opportunities for Reinventing the Economy of the OECS’.
Minister Konris Maynard underscored the significance of this theme and said that the sustainable energy development project is a pathway for new economic opportunities, encouraging innovation and building resilience for the small island developing states of the OECS.
He added that transforming their energy infrastructure to sustainable energy sources is characterized by being indigenous, clean and renewable while presenting a remarkable opportunity to reinvent their economies.
Goal of this week’s meeting
Minister Konris Maynard said that the goal of this week’s meeting aligned with their pursuit of the Sustainable Island State agenda (SISA) and to reduce their dependence on fossil fuel, strengthen energy security, and create a strong economy based on renewable energy, by expanding solar energy and geothermal sources.
Plethora of natural resources
Furthermore, Minister Maynard noted that the OECS region has several natural resources including wind, solar, geothermal, and the ocean. These resources can be utilized to fight against the challenges of climate change, and sustainably power regional economies.
He said that using these resources in the right way requires vision, cooperation, and commitment to long-term change that benefits the people of St Kitts and Nevis and the planet.
