Minister of Foreign Affairs and international trade in the government of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Denzil Douglas, travelled to the Bahamas with a delegation Headed by Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew. During the trip, Dr Douglas attended the Seventeenth Special Meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) in Nassau, Bahamas.

COFCOR is an important organ of the Caribbean Community. During the 44th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of CARICOM, they are taking the opportunity to engage with several State and non-State attendants of the Conference. The non-member attendants are: 

  • The Republic of Korea,  
  • United States of America,  
  • European Delegation, 
  • Spain 
  • United Arab Emirates 
  • The Republic of Azerbaijan. 

The Seventeenth Special Meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) is an opportunity to assist the Region in its efforts to recover and build resilience following the Covid-19 Pandemic. While attending the 17th Meeting of the COFCOR, Dr Denzil Douglas took out time to engage in dialogue with bilateral partners on deepening ties to generate mutual and sustainable yields.

Dr Denzil Douglas took to social media to share the update on these meetings. He noted that In a side meeting with Special Presidential Advisor of the US, Chris Dodd, he commended the United States for its recent efforts to engage with the country at a deeper and more frequent level. Additionally, Dr Douglas also expressed appreciation for the countries’ benefits as a consequence. Here, Minister Denzil Douglas took the opportunity to share security concerns that have existed for a long time and reiterated the government’s request to address the ongoing issues.

In a similar meeting, Dr Denzil Douglas seized the opportunity to forge a more meaningful relationship with a non-traditional partner with the potential for greater cooperation – Azerbaijan. Dr Douglas shared that a national of St Kitts and Nevis is pursuing studies in Azerbaijan. 

Accordingly, he reasoned that in light of the high literacy rate of St Kitts and Nevis and a large youth population, the country has a growing demand to pursue higher education. Therefore the minister of Foreign affairs noted that St Kitts and Nevis welcomes and appreciates Azerbaijan’s offer of scholarships“. Here, Dr Douglas pointed out that some areas exist between St Kitts, Nevis, and Azerbaijan to promote closer collaboration.
