The National Assembly of St. Kitts and Nevis convened on Thursday, February 27, 2025, for the first reading of three Bills. The legislation is part of the PM Terrance Drew-led government’s good governance agenda as it commits itself to transparency, accountability and the rule of law.
The Order Paper and the Notice for the assembly’s sitting at the National Assembly Chambers, Government Headquarters, Basseterre, have been issued.
PM Drew, Attorney-General Wilkin to introduce Bills
Prime Minister Drew, who also holds responsibility for finance, national security, health and other portfolios, will seek leave to introduce and give two Bills — Eastern Caribbean Securities Regulatory Commission Agreement Bill, 2025, and the Prisons (Amendment) Bill, 2025 — their first reading.
Besides the PM, Garth Wilkin, St. Kitts and Nevis’s attorney-general and the justice and legal affairs minister, will introduce and give the Integrity in Public Life (Amendment) Bill, 2025, a first reading.
Copies of the legislative documents will be made available on the website of St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service (www.sknis.gov.kn) under the Bills section. They can also be accessed via the Facebook page of the information service.
Proceedings of the assembly, which will begin at 10 am, can be seen live on ZIZ Radio (96 FM) and participating radio stations. It can also be viewed live on TV Channel 5 in St. Kitts and Channel 98 in Nevis. The live-streaming will also be available at www.zizonline.com.
PM Drew government’s series of Bills
The Labour government led by PM Drew has undertaken a series of legislations, aiming to improve various aspects of the country’s political and social life since coming to office in 2022. In early 2023, it passed three key Bills to facilitate its Good Governance Agenda — the Anti-Corruption Bill, 2023; the Integrity in Public Life (Amendment) Bill, 2023 and the Freedom of Information (Amendment) Bill, 2023.
In 2024, the government cleared the ASPIRE Bill 2024 paving the way for the full execution of the ground-breaking and transformative initiative titled ‘Achieving Success through Personal Investment, Resources and Education.
In January 2025, it passed the Vehicles and Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill, 2025, to address reckless driving and put a stop to road accidents.
