With the continuous efforts undertaken by the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Federation has marked a significant reduction in the crime rate, recording no cases of homicide in the first quarter of 2025. This marks a major milestone as the Federation has reportedly witnessed a consistent decline in the number of shootings, killings or other criminal activities related to guns or weapons.
This significant decline is attributed to continuous and valuable measures taken by the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Terrance Drew, who has worked to make St. Kitts and Nevis, a crime-free nation. Shedding light on this milestone, PM Drew described it as a significant improvement, stating that their holistic approaches has played a significant role in curbing the increasing crime rate in the country.
The Prime Minister also mentioned about the National Security Task Force, established in June 2023, noting that it has played significant role in addressing the growing crime rate in the Federation. Notably, the commissioning of a National Security Taskforce was initiated by the Prime Minister with a vision to approach the crime and violence, while maintaining the law and order in the Federation.
The National Security Task Force, headed by the Prime Minister Terrance Drew included a series of senior management officials from across the Government. The members included in the Force were the Ministry of National Security, Ministry of Social Development, Ministry of Education, and the Office of the Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis.
All the members of the taskforce worked diligently, conducted several strategies and policies in order to address the root causes of crime. Under this initiative, the Government primarily focused on children aged between six (6) and twelve (12), along with adolescents between thirteen (13) to nineteen (19) years, aimed to remodel the behaviour of the children, strengthening their critical thinking, conflict resolution skills and analytical skills.
PM Drew recognized the crucial role of 90-day anti-crime campaign
The Prime Minister Terrance Drew also acknowledged the 90-day anti-crime campaign launched by the Government in September 2024. Under this initiative, the Government engaged with the citizens of communities, encouraging them a adopt a positive approach for the welfare of the society.
PM Drew noted that the 90-day anti-crime campaign is a part of the broader Citizen Security Strategy implemented by them with a vision to promote and foster the safety and security of the citizens across the communities. This campaign also featured the staging of the nationwide consultants, community walk-throughs and targeted interventions for at-risk youth.
The leader of the nation described all this achievement, a collective effort by all the citizens, who has worked hard to protect and uphold the dignity of St. Kitts and Nevis.
