To commemorate the struggle of the nation’s forebears and to honor the Bucley’s Uprising in 1935, Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew announced that a monument will be constructed with an initial investment of $100,000 on the Buckley’s land recently acquired by the government.
PM Drew stated that this land will be officially owned by the Buckley’s Uprising Committee – from the main road to the boundary of the Joseph N. France (JNF) General Hospital.
He further added that $100,000 has already been allotted to the committee to begin laying the groundwork for the construction of the important national monument.
Moreover, the funding for the monument is a part of the government’s commitment of providing $1 million over time to ensure that the monument stands as an outstanding tribute to the resilience and determination of those who led the 1935 revolt.
PM Dr Terrance Drew added that this monument will not only remind them of their history but will also remind them of the principles their ancestors stood for, that they must follow every day.
Prime Minister Drew also paid tribute to the Rastafari Movement and the St Kitts and Nevis Trades and Labour Union to ensure that the importance of the Bucley’s Uprising is never forgotten.
90th anniversary of Bucley’s Uprising
The Federation celebrated the 90th anniversary of the Buckley’s Uprising on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, which was joined by Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew, Minister of Agriculture Samal Duggins, and several other members of the Parliament.
Minister Samal Duggins extended his gratitude to the Nyabinghi Theocracy Order for their invitation to celebrate this occasion and also appreciated Konris Maynard, MP for Constituency #3 and Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew for transforming this vision into a reality.
