This summer, when it hosts two new initiatives by the Caribbean Premier League, the Warner Park Cricket Stadium in St. Kitts’s reputation as a location for thrilling games, energised fans, and an exuberant and inviting atmosphere is sure to expand (CPL).
The first is a brand-new, cutting-edge competition called THE 6IXTY that Chris Gayle launched on Friday, June 24, 2022. Gayle is the brand ambassador for the brand-new 60-ball competition that will start on August 24.
Six men’s teams and three women’s teams will compete in the new competition, according to CPL. There are six wickets for each batting side. Thirty balls are bowled at one end, followed by another thirty at the opposite end. With the option to unlock a third PowerPlay over by hitting two sixes in the first 12 balls, each batting side has two PowerPlay overs. The pace of the game will also be taken into consideration since if the overs are not finished within the stipulated time, a team member will be eliminated during the final six balls. By voting on the timing of a “Mystery Free Hit,” fans can directly affect the outcome of the game.
The second new project by CPL is the addition of a women’s Twenty20 competition that will take place in conjunction with the men’s T20 competition on August 30. The Trinbago Knight Riders, Barbados Royals, and Guyana Amazon Warriors are participating in the inaugural WCPL.
The WCPL and THE 6IXTY games will both be played exclusively in St. Kitts and Nevis. In addition, Warner Park, one of four locations for the 2022 competition, will host home matches for the Men’s CPL Twenty20 winners, the St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots.
The Honourable Vincent Byron Jr., Minister of Sports, announced that the CPL will host 31 matches of top-tier cricket in August and September.
The minister declared, “We have a really interesting programme approaching, and we look forward to having our people… enjoy a fun-filled sporting period.”
Over the course of the competition’s ten seasons, the CPL and St. Kitts and Nevis have cultivated a close bond. Warner Park hosted the tournament’s semifinal and championship games in 2014, as well as the “Beefy Bash” charity game between teams captained by Sir Ian Botham of England and Brian Lara of the West Indies. Other noteworthy events include the founding of the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots in 2015 and hosting all of the 2021 tournament’s games.
