The Ministry of Social Development and Gender Affairs is looking for foster parents in St Kitts and Nevis. The foster caregivers should be interested in training youth 10-17 years old and children with multiple challenges to help strengthen coping skills and lead the change process with the ministry.

The foster parent’s responsibilities are countless but to articulaten the main ones are as follows.

Providing a safe home

Many children do not have a stable family life. They may come from a background of abuse, addiction or neglect. A sense of security and stability is essential for their rehabilitation. As a caregiver, it is the individual’s responsibility to provide the child with a place they can call home. It is more than just a roof over their heads; it is a place where they are cared for and feel happy and comfortable.

Providing love and support

Moving away from home and staying with a stranger can be traumatic for any child or young person. They are surrounded by people they don’t know and are in an unfamiliar environment. The love and support of an understanding and trusted adult is an invaluable resource that a foster parent can provide for a child’s well-being. This helps them to calm down and eventually grow and mature.

 Education Responsibility

Foster children must attend school. Education is an important part of a child’s development. A foster parent must take an active interest in their foster child and their education.

Provide Heath Care

Health is one of the most important basic needs among humans. The foster parents must make sure the child has access to the medical care needed.

Manage children’s behaviour.

Challenging behaviour can often be a problem for children in care. They may have had negative parenting experiences and are not used to responding to instructions. They may also be vulnerable or have had a traumatic past. It is important that the carer is caring, patient and understanding and that they have a system for dealing with difficult behavior so that the child can cope with their situation.

Additional information: fostering is a learning process. New challenges are always waiting for foster parents because no two children are alike. It is the responsibility of the foster parent to make sure that they create room for improvement to become the best parents to the children.

All applicants will be required to undergo complete screening by the Department of Probation and Child Protection Services.

Interested persons are asked to contact the ministry or email ohpunit@gov.kn for further information or to schedule an interview.
