Guyana saw the final match of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL 2022) being played at the Provide Stadium. The tournament’s last game saw the Barbados Royals locking horns with the Jamaica Tallawahs.
The match started with the Royals winning the toss and electing to bat. The decision of the Royals didn’t suit the team well enough.
The Tallawahs claimed the CPL title for the third time, after defeating the royals by 8 wickets. All this while almost 4 overs of the game were still left to be played.
Considering that they had only lost two games in the league stage and powered their way through to the final with a dominant win in the first qualifier, the Royals were the favourites heading into the final.
On the other hand, the pathway to the trophy was the hardest for Tallawahs since they were supposed to win three matches in four days to reach the award after scraping through to the playoffs, where they had finished fourth.
The royals did not have a smooth start to this game, with Rahkeem Cornwall going berserk at the top of the order. Cornwall smashed four sixes to help his side race to 54 in the first five overs.
Allen applied the brakes to the scoring of the Royals as he first removed Cornwall off the final ball of the powerplay. He then went on to get rid of Kyle Mayers. The scoring rate dipped alarmingly post that as only 18 runs came off the next four overs after the powerplay.
In the end, Fabian Allen and Nicholson Gordon did all the magic that restricted the Royals to 161 runs for a loss of 7 wickets.
In their turn at the batting side of the pitch, the Tallawahs have Brooks to thank as he stepped up for his team after scoring a century in the last game against the Amazon Warriors. Even though Kennar Lewis departed without scoring in the first over of the chase, Tallawahs didn’t panic.
An unbeaten 83 from opener Brandon King helped Jamaica Tallawahs script an incredible turnaround to clinch the 2022 Caribbean Premier League title. King and Shamarh Brooks set the platform in the run chase with a crisp 86-run stand as the Tallawahs defeated Barbados Royals quite easily in the final.
