Under the St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party, the health sector of St Kitts and Nevis has seen significant progress. In the last three years since the elections of Dr Terrance Drew and SKNLP, the healthcare sector has transformed.
The government of St Kitts and Nevis, led by Dr Terrance Drew understand the need for a robust and state of the art healthcare sector. PM Drew, who is also the Minister of Health has helped in improving the healthcare sector of the country.
Healthcare Workers acknowledged
Under his leadership, healthcare workers received honorarium for their services during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The Prime Minister had shared that this was crucial in order to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the people during the pandemic.
During the fortieth anniversary of St Kitts and Nevis independence, healthcare workers, along with other contributors of social security were paid bonuses up to EC$1,000. Retired GAE Employees attached with healthcare, like nurses, cleaning staff, support staff and more were paid their dues.
The administration consistently celebrates the healthcare workers, including nurses., support staff, doctors and more for their dedication to public service.
Upgrades to JNF General Hospital
The country’s premier healthcare institution, Joseph N France General Hospital has also seen tremendous development in the last three years. The Ministry of Health has renovated the hospital lobby area to make the setting more appealing and patient friendly.
With the renovated lobby, the family members who accompany the patients can also wait and exist in a relaxed and calm environment. In the initial months of administration, Dr Drew led Ministry of Health also renovated the roof of the hospital.
The Ministry of Health also secured cataract equipment for the eye clinic, upgraded the renal department at the JNF General Hospital. The Ministry also purchased an MRI Machine for the JNF General Hospital.
The Ministry also updated the chemical cabinet at the oncology department of St Kitts and Nevis. Further, the hospital has a fully automated urinalysis machine, air condition units for the medical and surgical wards.
Other healthcare institutions improved
The Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew and his team also worked on the development and upgradation of the other healthcare centers in the country. Under his leadership, Pogson Medical Center has a full time medical practitioner always available on call.
Further, the team also took up the restoration and decluttering of the Cardin Home. The residents of the home are living with better facilities and without facing any overcrowding.
Training programmes
The Ministry of Health has also arranged trainings for the healthcare workers so that they can continue to deliverbest quality healthcare and infrastructure. 250 healthcare workers across St Kitts and Nevis were given the opportunity to participate in a three-day training course,
Under this training programme the attendants learnt necessary life support skills and knowledge. This helped ensure that patients were given the best services in a wide variety of in-facility and pre-hospital settings.
This 250 member training initiative also included 50 medical doctors who benefitted tremendously from the initiative.
