A Sim Caribbean Cybersecurity for older Adults Hybrid Workshop was organised by the St. Kitts and Nevis National Commission for UNESCO. The workshop took place on Wednesday 13 May 2026. The workshop was organised in three Caribbean islands simultaneously: St. Kitts and Nevis, Grenada and Antigua and Barbuda.
In St. Kitts and Nevis the workshop was held at the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions (CCCU) CUNA Conference Centre in Fortlands, Bassterre and it was a one day workshop. The main aim of the workshop was to bring together regional stakeholders to have discussion on cybersecurity, media literacy, misinformation and digital transformation in the Caribbean region.
Minister of Education, Dr. Geoffrey Hanley mentioned in the workshop that in today’s world where everyone heavily depends on digital technology and our old generations must be familiar with it and learn it. As by learning basic digital skills, the use of media will help them in being independent and safe.
According to reports the workshop was the broader part of the UNESCO programme for Small Island Developing States Inclusive Initiative on Media and Information Literacy in the Caribbean. Through this programme, the organisation is working on supporting Caribbean small islands to become known with digital and media updates which help the public to access information safely and adapt themselves to the society trends.
Moreover, the workshop helped in strengthening digital awareness specifically in older adults by providing skills and knowledge on how to navigate the digital landscape responsibly and safely.
In the workshop Regional Director of UNESCO Regional Office for the Caribbean, Eric Falt also stated the need of digital awareness among the older adults. He said, “It is important to realise and to remember that when older adults become more confident online, it is entire families and communities that benefit”.
Minister of State of Ageing, Disabilities, Youth and Gender Affairs, Sen. Isalean Phillip mentioned that by introducing media information to females help them in protecting themselves from scams, digital exploitation and misinformation and can do business online without fear.
Additionally, on the same day the workshop was held through virtual engagement in Grenada at Radisson Grenada Beach Resort and in Antigua and Barbuda at the Villa Polyclinic In St. John’s.
