The National Secretariat for Human Security and Wellbeing hosted a stakeholder engagement meeting as a part of their summer of intervention initiative on June 17. The initiative will help in bringing more opportunities for positive engagements to the youngsters of the country
The officials have shared that the administration of St Kitts and Nevis wants to reduce the youngsters’ exposure to negative activities especially those associated with crime and violence. The administration of St Kitts and Nevis has been working on coming up with activities that can engage the youngsters in productive, positive activities.
The summer months are an excellent opportunity for the administration to demonstrate and highlight positive activities that can help the youngsters grow into well rounded productive citizens.
The meeting was attended by stakeholders from different sectors of the country, including representatives from summer camps, community organisations, youth programmes, churches. The attendants discussed the importance of early intervention for the betterment of the youth of the country.
The stakeholders were provided with research data reaffirming the importance of intervention. The research data also highlighted how community involvement can help in managing crime and violence in the country. The officials have shared that the members of the community can play a crucial role in nurturing a community with positively influenced youngsters.
The session also highlighted that there is an increased trend of violent activity in the country in the summer months. The reason for this is that the schools across the island are closed and the youngsters have more free time on their hands.
Without positive activities to occupy their time, youngsters can often find themselves towards unlawful activities. The government understands and acknowledges these risk factors and highlighted that they are committed to addressing risk factors before they escalate into violence and criminal activity.
Senator Isalean Phillip, Co-Chair of the National Advisory Council for Human Security and Wellbeing spoke on the importance of the initiative in detail. “Summer should be a period of growth, exploration, and opportunity for our young people.
“Through Summer of Intervention and its Own Your Summer programme, we are working with communities and programme providers to ensure that young people have access to positive, structured activities that build confidence, strengthen important life skills, and create pathways to future opportunities.”
