St. Kitts and Nevis is attending the 13th OECS Council of Ministers: Environmental Sustainability (COM:ES 13) in the Commonwealth of Dominica. Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment, Climate Action, and Constituency Empowerment, Joyelle Clarke led the team on behalf of the federation.
The Ministers from other patriots of the Caribbean Region also attended the meeting in Dominica. The meeting brought together several stakeholders from across the Caribbean region working in the field of environment and climate specialisation.
The officials have shared that the event was attended by technical experts, development partners, and regional leaders. The aim of the meeting is to start working to confront the growing environmental and climate challenges facing Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
The COM:ES 13 meeting was hosted under the theme: “The OECS Collective Resolve: Innovative Pathways in a High-Risk Global Landscape.” The opening remarks for the event were delivered by the Director-General of the OECS, Dr. Didacus Jules.
While speaking in the presence of some of the most experienced stakeholders on the field, he urged for a shift towards bold action. The officials have shared that the members of the community must go from the “business as usual” attitude to coordinated regional action.
According to the OECS Director General, environmental sustainability is no longer a niche concern. It is instead a very important aspect for the survival, economic stability, and future resilience of OECS Member States.
Working as individual nations will not work for the region anymore and coordination is important for the region to move forward. The officials have shared that it is important for the administrations of the region to work together, accelerate climate financing efforts, and transform COM:ES into “a strategic engine for coordinated regional transformation.”
The event was hosted under the chairmanship of Cozier Frederick, Minister for Environment, Rural Modernisation, Kalinago Upliftment and Constituency Empowerment of the Commonwealth of Dominica.
The meeting went on for two days and held discussions on areas like regional resilience, biodiversity protection, climate adaptation, sustainable financing, and environmental governance.
