St Kitts and Nevis has denied entry to 17 Nigerian nationals who arrived in the Federation via regional airline services. Notably, the 17 passengers had come to the Caribbean via a direct Air Peace flight which departed from Lagos.
The government of St Kitts and Nevis has confirmed that they reached this conclusion after engaging several healthcare authorities. St Kitts and Nevis has confirmed that they are committed to safeguarding public health.
The decision has been taken keeping in mind the WHO recognised emergency situation surrounding Ebola. Nigeria, which was the country of origin for the flight has been identified for being at an elevated risk surrounding the ebola.
Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has made the announcement that Nigeria is at elevated risk for Ebola importation. This is mainly due to evolving conditions linked to outbreaks in parts of Africa and increased movement through major international transit hubs. The authorities have further confirmed that at this time an Ebola case connected to the present outbreak has been reported in Nigeria. However, the government of St Kitts and Nevis is asserting that the presence of an official advisory means that vigilance and precautionary measures are necessary.
The Government has claimed that St Kitts and Nevis holds its longstanding and cordial relationship with the people of Nigeria in great esteem. The authorities have shared that they regret any inconvenience or distress experienced by those affected by the decision.
The government has reiterated that the health and safety of the people is their highest priority.
All the steps that they are thus taking fall in line with this priority. “Actions are being guided by caution, responsibility, and established public health protocols, while ensuring that all individuals are treated with dignity and respect.”
The government has asked the people cooperate fully with the laws and regulations of St Kitts and Nevis. He shared that they want to make sure of effective implementation of the public health measures currently in place.
