Nevis Island Administration has signed an agreement to start drilling for the geothermal production wells. The geothermal energy project has been one of the most anticipated project which will allow the island to become more energy independent.
The Premier of Nevis made the announcement with the people of the island during his monthly press conference. Premier Brantley shared that Iceland Drilling has been selected as the company responsible for the drilling of the wells.
The Premier also added that the Iceland Drilling and Nevis Electricity Company have signed an agreement between themselves. The administration believes that the project will move forward with a satisfactory pace.
The Premier of Nevis, Mark Brantley also serves as the Minister of Energy for the Nevis Island Administration. He asserted that before the drilling can begin at the Hamilton site, the administration has to work on several other preparatory matters.
These preparations include land acquisition and other logistical requirements. The Premier added that they are the process of setting up a geothermal unit for the project.
This will ensure that a team of professionals is employed which is completely dedicated to the work ongoing in the geothermal project. For now, the people who are working on the project are also part of the Nevis Electricity Company.
The former General Manager of NEVLEC Albert Gordon has been retained exclusively to support the geothermal initiative. The Premier of Nevis asserted that Gordon has played a vital role in moving the project to its present stage.
He has been contributing valuable expertise and commitment to the project. The officials have shared that they are focused on the plant construction and will be expecting request for proposals while drilling activities proceed simultaneously.
The officials have shared that they are going to start the drilling process for the two geothermal production wells and one injection well. According to the officials, once the project is completed, the island of Nevis is expected to establish a 30-megawatt geothermal power plant. The plant will be able to generate more than enough electricity to meet Nevis’ domestic demand.
Financial support for the initiative is being provided through a package of international funding totaling approximately US$71.6 million.
