The Minister of Public Infrastructure, Energy & Utilities, et al, Konris Maynard visited the Quarry of St Kitts to witness in person the upgrades and advancements that the quarry has seen in the last year. The Minister highlighted that the quarry is in major components of the public infrastructure mechanism of the government.
The public Works Department has been making crucial investments in upgrading the quarry division. The Public Works Department has announced that the quarry plays a central role in several development avenues across the island.
Minister Maynard said the quarry is positioning itself as a vital engine of economic development in the country. The Minster met with the manager of the Quarry, Jermaine Lake, who provided the Minister with updates on the developments which have taken place in the community.
According to the MInister, the quarry has done one of the biggest upgrades in over a decade.
The quarry has acquired a 37 tonne excavator for the quarry, which is the biggest machine in use in the quarry. The Manager said that the other excavators in the quarry have the capacity of 34 tonnes and 33 tonnes respectively.
The 37 tonne excavator is the most optimise for the quarry operations including digging and excavation. The Manager was delighted to report that the productivity of the quarry is expected to grow with the upgrades.
The quarry has also acquired a 30 tonne walk back truck which is the largest truck in the quarry. The capacity of the truck is the largest compared to the other vehicles on the quarry, which can carry upto 25 tonnes of material.
The Manager also informed Minister Maynard about the power screen setup which they have acquired. The machine produces material at approximately 200 tonnes per hour. The newest machine is much faster than the other machines that the quarry has had previously.
The quarry manager has shared that the speed of the production is apparent with the new machine. The quality of the output is also much improved with all the new machines working together. The manager informed the Minister that the quarry operations have since become much more modern with the new upgrades.
