The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis has shared that his government has been working towards reversing several long time injustices under the prior government. Dr Terrance Drew recalled that under the previous administration, qualified doctors were employed through the STEP programme.
The doctors were not being treated as full government employees which should have been done. Dr Terrance Drew said that this was one of the first injustices that his administration has corrected.
He highlighted that under his leadership, Doctors across the country are treated as government employees and are also eligible for permanent positions. Dr Drew took to his social media to recall that they have made these advancements to improve healthcare service delivery for the people of the island.
Dr Drew also recalled that under the prior administration nurses trained in Cuba were not eligible to register in St Kitts and Nevis. On the contrary, Cuban nationals were allowed the opportunity to register and work in St Kitts and Nevis as nurses.
The present administration of the federation also reversed this unfair policy to give a fair opportunity to nursing professionals. The Prime Minister said that the previous policies were disrespectful to the efforts of the medical professionals who have given several years of their life and put in efforts into becoming medical professionals.
The Prime Minister also highlighted other advancements that the government has made in the healthcare sector in the last four years. Dr Drew and his team took office in 2022 and they have worked to restore respect for healthcare workers.
The government also paid honorariums to frontline workers, nurses and doctors for working during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew said that the healthcare workers risked their lives to care for people during the pandemic.
Dr Drew said that his administration has been responsible for changing several unfair policies and treating healthcare professionals with the dignity they deserve.
