A cleanup exercise was done in the historic site of the twin islands, the Spooner’s Cotton Ginnery in Cayon as a part of the Environment Month 2026 celebration. The cleanup exercise was done on Wednesday 10, June 2026 and the exercise was led by the Ministry of Environment’s Parks and Beaches Division.
According to sources, the Clean up exercise at the Spooner’s Cotton Ginnery was part of the Environment Month 2026 community Clean-up. Officials mention why they choose the site for the cleanup exercise. As it is one the site which reflects the twin islands deep rooted past as it was a federation’s former cotton industry.
The exercise was coordinated by Javon Alfred, from the Parks and Beaches Division. He shared that the clean up exercise in the Spooner’s Cotton Ginnery was a wider part of the ministry project in preserving important and significant historical landmarks in the twin islands. He said, “It’s very important for us to put our best foot forward because, it’s our culture, it’s our heritage”.
He further explained that protecting and cleaning historic landmarks helps us in telling our next generation about our past. Moreover, he mentioned that the Department of Parks and Beaches will continuously work to support and preserve natural assets of the twins islands and it will also help in improving the tourism sector for both the islands.
He said, “ The role that parks and beaches play is very important, as we keep the country clean and if the country is not clean that would be a damper on tourism”.
Additionally, the Environment Month 2026 was started on 5 June 2026 and continued till 27 June 2026. In between the timeline there are a number of events which were done and are scheduled to take place. The Environment Month 2026 is an initiative taken by the St. Kitts and Nevis, Ministry of Environment, Climate Action and Constituency Empowerment.
The theme of the event is Climate Action: For Environment, For Empowerment, For Everyone and it is a month long series program. The St. Kitts and Nevis-Anguilla National Bank is officially a sustainability partner of the Environment Month 2026.
