Azruddin Mohamed Assists in Rescue of 38 Indian Workers Allegedly Exploited by Mining Company in Guyana

Thirty eight nationals of India, who were working under the EKAA HRIM Earth Resources Management in Guyana under inhumane conditions have been rescued by the leader of the Opposition of Guyana, Azruddin Mohamed. The group of workers, of which there are currently 38, came to Guyana to work and were treated badly by the employers.

They faced serious issues and problems in their workplace during the term of their employment with the EKAA HRIM Earth Resources Management. Allegedly, the passports of the workers were confiscated by the employers. 

One of the employees, who was working with the company, allegedly died during his tenure of employment with EKAA HRIM Earth Resources Management. Another individual faced a serious injury in the workplace and lost four of his fingers.

This individual was allegedly repatriated to India after his injuries. The employees were kept in extremely poor living conditions and were denied access to food and drinking water. The company has been accused of extracting labour under duress from their employees and breaking their employment contracts. 

The duress of the 38 nationals came to the attention of the leader of the opposition of Guyana, Azruddin Mohamed. He helped in the rescue of the 38 workers following which Mohammad and members of parliament from the We Invest in Nationhood Politically Party met with the High Commissioner of India to Guyana, Manoj Kumar. 

This meeting was hosted on Sunday, May 17, 2026 and attended by five of the workers alongside LoP and members of the WIN political  party. The five members were representing their group of 38 individuals. 

The representatives from the EKAA HRIM Earth Resources Management company were also part of the meeting along with their legal representative. During the meeting the opposition urged that the passports and belongings of the affected nationals should be immediately returned to them. 

The members of the opposition present at the meeting demanded that the employees also receive compensation for the breach of contract which they faced at the hands of the company. The political representatives also demanded the company to pay compensation to the deceased individual’s family as well as the man who lost fingers in a prior workplace incident.

The representatives of the company who were present during the meeting claimed that they were not authorised to make any of these promises. At this point the High Commissioner of India to Guyana took the responsibility of communicating the matter to the senior management of the EKAA HRIM Earth Resources Management company. 

The High Commissioner also asked the company to provide an update with proof of payment by April 18. As per the latest updates, the employees have successfully received their passports from the company. 

However, their salaries have not been cleared and their airfares have also not been given to the employees. Political leader Azruddin Mohamed asserted that he would continue to campaign for the employees till they are safely and respectfully repatriated to their country.
