ALTA Online Project Officer Dr. Deborah Thomas of Trinidad and Tobago visited St. Kitts and Nevis this month, where she paid a courtesy call on Minister of Education Dr. Geoffrey Hanley and led a delegation of education officials on visits to two primary schools participating in the ALTA Online Programme.
According to the Ministry of Education, the delegation visited St. Paul’s Primary School and Dean Glasford Primary School. Accompanying Dr. Thomas were Chief Education Officer Francil Morris, Director of the Curriculum Development Unit Amanda Serrant-Edmead and Senior Education Officer Janelle Williams-Jacobs.
The purpose of the visit was to gather feedback from the schools’ ALTA Online mentors, assess the programme’s overall effectiveness, and observe how well it is engaging students. Officials also discussed the programme’s implementation in classrooms, students’ active participation and opportunities to further strengthen its delivery at the school level.
The Adult Tutors Association (ALTA) Online Project was first implemented in 2024 at the Violet Primary School. After positive results from the pilot phase, the ALTA Online Project was officially expanded in 2025 to primary schools across the St. Kitts and Nevis and started the journey providing access to students of digital literacy.
The Ministry of Education mentioned that through the ALTA online program in collaboration with the organisation the administration is working on providing advanced and innovative methods to learn and evolve to the young minds of the federation. The ALTA Online Project is an online literacy initiative which helps the students to work on their spelling, reading, comprehension and writing skills through interactive activity including digital lessons.
Notably, the Adult Literacy Tutors Association (ALTA) is a non-profitable and volunteer based organization. The main objective of the program is to enhance the literacy among the upcoming generation including teenagers, children and adults, who face difficulty while reading and writing.
