The groundbreaking ceremony of the Creative Arts Center, on Friday, January 9 has sparked controversy and debate in St Kitts and Nevis. The controversy is being majorly fuelled by misinformation, panic and political narrative building.
The St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party Administration is on the edge of delivering a groundbreaking development for the creatives of the country, However, the historic step forward is once again politicized and given negative publicity motivated by the opposition of the country.
SKN Times, a media outlet, which has been popularly sided with the opposition has alleged that the creatives of the country were not consulted before the groundbreaking of the Creative Arts Center.
Allegedly, some people have also claimed that they were not aware of the plans for the construction of a creative arts center before the groundbreaking. Others have alleged that if there were consultation, they were limited to the newer creatives.
The fact of the matter, however, comes out to be that the plans for the Creative Arts Center have been discussed on multiple occasions by the Minister of Creative Economy, Samal Duggins. The Ministry led by Duggins has also been very vocal about the creation of better avenues, jobs and career paths for the creatives of the country.
In a press conference in July, the Minister of Creative Economy, Samal Duggins had publicly announced that the plans for the groundbreaking of the Creative Arts Center have been progressing. In a prior public appearance back in April 2025, the Minister had announced that the construction of the Creative Arts Center is expected to begin sometime in late 2025.
Talking about the claims that the creatives of the nation were not consulted for the Creative Arts Center, the facts are completely opposite on this as well. In October 20233, shortly after the launch of the Ministry of Creative Economy, Samal Duggins and the Ministry of Creative economy organized a Creative Arts Centre Consultation & Mixer.
The MInister has kept the people of St Kitts and Nevis up to date on the developments regarding the construction of the Creative Arts Center. The claims negating them are misleading and non factual.
Further, the project is in its initial stages with major work still ahead of them. Minister of Creative Economy maintains that he is standing with the creatives of the country.
The groundbreaking of the Creative Arts Center is proof that Minister Duggins and the SKNLP leadership are dedicated to delivering on that promise. The creative arts center appears to be a very important project for bringing the limelight to the creatives of St Kitts and Nevis.
This is the first time that a project is recognizing the economic value of the creatives of St Kitts and Nevis and giving them the space to flourish and grow.
