The US has visited various countries in the Caribbean to engage in economic talks.
Today, Adam Boehler is to be part of a high-level delegation from the US which due to arrive in Jamaica later this week for holding discussions with Government officials regarding rejuvenating the economy of Jamaica.
US Ambassador to Jamaica, Donald Tapia, said last Friday morning that the team of about 12 to 14 persons would include Adam Boehler, CEO of the United States International Development Finance Corporation.
He said that the delegation is expected to arrive in Jamaica around Wednesday this week.
He said that one of the things which the President of the United States has directed is that this money is to be circled in the Caribbean. So they are talking about Haiti, Guyana and other islands which the President had directed.
Tapia said during the live broadcast that the US delegation would have meetings with several Government officials, including Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Minister of Science, Energy, and Technology, Daryl Vaz and Finance and Public Service Minister, Dr Nigel Clarke.
Tapia said that it is the highest delegation which has been to Jamaica in years. So they invited them, and the delegation is coming.
He said that he does not know what programs they are bringing forth, but they are coming to Jamaica for bringing programs and for discussing things with the Prime Minister, Minister Clarke, and Minister Vaz.
He further added that there are a lot of ministries they would be talking to and exchanging ideas of how the Jamaican economy can be rejuvenated.
Jamaica’s economy has taken a blow due to the fallout caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The quarter from April to June was even worse, having contracted 18.4 per cent as reported by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica.
Unemployment is also a significant problem affecting the economic growth of the island.
The tourism sector is far off from total recovery, and several other industries continue to be impacted by COVID-19 protocols, especially curfew measures.
