Barbados: “This week we witnessed our covid-19 positivity rate and deaths reaching record levels at 20% and 19 deaths respectively in three days. The pain, sadness and death are being felt across Barbados. As you browse our social media feeds, there are outpourings of sympathy and compassion for those families which the deadly Covid-19 Delta variant has visited,” said Andre Worrell, Vice President of the Democratic Labour Party.
The doctors have again appealed for the Mia Mottley administration to do more to limit the spread of the deadly delta variant. President of BAMP Dr Linda Williams and even government backbencher Dr. Sonia Brown MP, have appealed for doctors’ views to be heard and included in the protocols adopted by this government to fight the spread of Covid-19.
“The Democratic Labour Party joins and lends support to the call made by BAMP for the Mia Mottley administration to take on board the recommendation offered by BAMP to bring the rampant community spread of Covid-19 in Barbados under control. Covid-19 is a medical crisis and therefore, medical solutions should take priority over all others at this time. If the appropriate medical solutions are not implemented, the pain, sadness, and death attributed to covid will undermine any economic growth and development opportunities,” he added in his statement on social media.
“We are no longer surprised that Prime Minister Mottley continues to invite persons to sit at the table, only to silence their ideas and voices, as this has been her modus operandi from day one. However, Barbados deserves a leader who will take a stand in the best interests of the country in times of crisis. Unfortunately, we are losing the covid battle as Prime Minister Mottley refuses to make the necessary decisions to stop the rampant community spread of the deadly delta variant.”
“We urge Barbadians not to give up hope. This is the time to reach out to family members, friends and Neighbours and appeal to them to take Covid-19 seriously. Have that heart-to-heart conversation with the youth and the elderly. Do not expect the government to save you, you must put the measures to save yourself. With close to 5500 persons in isolation, our health care system is overwhelmed. This surge is negatively impacting non-covid medical needs.”
Now is the time to step-up efforts to vaccinate the elderly, persons with co-morbidities any family member who can take the vaccine but has not yet made the decision to take it. Speak with a doctor or a nurse and make those decision urgently. It can save your life and the life of a loved one.
Limit your social interaction and when you have to go into public areas, protect yourself by maintaining adequate social distance, wearing your mask properly and practice regular hand washing and hand sanitizing.
The government needs to implement a solid plan to bring covid under control. Now is not the time to ignore the doctors’ advice or try to silence concerned Barbadians who are trying desperately to put forward ideas to save this country. It is not just the business sector that is essential. We owe it to our children who have not met new friends because their classroom is a desk with a tablet. We owe it to our elderly who have a bullseye on their backs. Most importantly, we owe it to our country and the future that it deserves. Barbados needs an Operation Seek and Save.
