Department of Cooperatives St. Kitts celebrated the 104th International Day of Cooperatives in collaboration with the St. Kitts-Nevis National Co-operative League (SKNNCL) and the St. Kitts Co-operative Credit Union Ltd. On the occasion of the International Day of Cooperatives the organisation organized the “Cooperatives Week”.
The theme of the week was “Cooperatives for a Peaceful World”. The week was officially kicked off with a panel discussion “COOP Talk” in partnership with St. Kitts-Nevis National Co-operative League (SKNNCL) on July 1, 2026. The discussion was held at the CCCU Conference room, in Fortlands, Basseterre.
The panel discussion was held under the theme of “The Relevance of Cooperatives in Nation Building of St. Kitts & Nevis”. The engagement was attended by the cooperatives, stakeholders and industry experts from across the island nation. The organisation shared that the main aim of the discussion was to inspect the role and importance of the sustainable development of St. Kitts and Nevis.
During the engagements experts discussed practical solutions on improving and strengthening the administration measures which have been taken towards community building and enhancing the economic sector. In the discussion, the organisation also encouraged the concept of knowledge sharing including fostering growth across the cooperative sector in the region.
Additionally, to commemorate the International Day of Cooperatives, the Minister of Small Business, Entrepreneurship, Cooperatives & the Creative Economy, Samal Duggins delivered the national address on Saturday July 4, 2026. Every year International Day of Cooperatives is celebrated annually on the first Saturday of July.
In the address, Duggins shared that he felt proud that the ministry of agriculture and fisheries, through the administration’s initiative of the school saving junior cooperative programme has continuously contributed to the development of the region. He further explained that the government’s vision of sustainable island and cooperatives is playing an important role in promoting inclusive development.
Notably, the Minister also expressed gratitude to the cooperative members including volunteers, leaders and supporters. He said, “Together, let us continue to embrace the values of cooperation, solidarity and shared responsibility as we build a stronger, more inclusive, and more peaceful St. Kitts and Nevis”.
