Attorney General Garth Wilkin of St. Kitts and Nevis attended a meeting regarding tackling the transnational organized crime which was hosted in Barbados. The meeting was held at Hilton Barbados Resort on 11 May, 2026 and the meeting was scheduled for two days.ย
In the engagement there were other Attorneys General present and other professionals from legal background including legal experts, prosecutors, policymakers, and regional security stakeholders across the Caribbean region.
The main reason behind the engagement was to advance the development of a regional model legal framework for Joint Investigation Teams (JITs) for financial Investigations and Asset Recovery (FIAR) in the Caribbean.
The legal engagement was hosted by the Office of the Attorney General of Barbados along with collective collaboration of Regional Security System (RSS), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and GovRisk International as part of the one Caribbean programme.ย
The main aim of the legal forum was to strengthen the cross border cooperation in handling organised crime including financial crime, illicit asset movement. It was established during the meeting that criminal networks were continuously exploiting the jurisdictional gaps through evolving technologies and organisations has to take strong action against it to ensure the safety of the public and the rule of law.
Executive Director of the RSS, Rear Admiral Errington Shurland highlights the importance of the initiative. He said organizations have to look into innovative measures and collaborative responses to deal with criminal networks effectively.ย
Admiral Errington Shurland, RSS Executive Director Rear Admiral who led the opening of the forum stated that the Joint Investigation Teams will help in improving coordination and information circulation between the jurisdictions who have to deal with connected criminal networks.
Wilfred Abrahams, Barbados Attorney General also shared his remarks regarding the new initiative he said, โ This initiative over the next two days resonated strongly with us as it captures two key principles of us, enhancing regional collaboration and coordination, and this particularly so among law enforcement agenciesโ.ย
