The government of St. Kitts and Nevis has launched a new Digital Insurance Card system. The aim of the digital insurance card is to help the people of the country in accessing faster, easier, and more convenient access to healthcare benefits.
The initiative has been started with the civil servants of the country. The cards were given to the civil servants at the launch ceremony of the initiative
The Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, who also handles the responsibility for the Ministry of Health has expressed his most sincere delight in announcing that the initiative will make healthcare affordable for the people.
Prime Minister Drew announced during the launch event that 8,500 people will immediately benefit from this service. The people will be able to get all the healthcare services without paying the full amount for treatment and tests upfront.
In the upcoming months, the initiative will be expanded to cover other persons across the island.
The Minister of Health talked about the various challenges that the nation was facing in the past with respect to financial aspects. The Prime Minister said that most of the time, the people had to pay hundreds of dollars upfront to get access to treatments
Afterwards, the patients had to go through significant paperwork to get reimbursed from social security. This led to the financial planning of said household to suffer as the cheques usually took a significant amount of time to come through.
However, with the Digital Insurance Card system, the people will be able to access healthcare in a more affordable and smooth manner. The Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis said that the people will be able to access medical treatment with the swipe of a card.
He noted that they did not want the civil servants and government employees to continue to struggle with filling of forms and waiting for insurance payouts to come through.
With this new initiative, the people will not have to worry about paying the whole amount for their treatments upfront. They will be asked to pay only the co-pay which they already pay after insurance.
This also means that the people will not be bound by deadlines to fill out the insurance paperwork. The treatments will also become significantly more affordable for the people.
In his address, the Prime Minister said that Healthcare is a human right and it should not be a privilege.
