The Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the St. Kitts-Nevis National Commission for UNESCO are making efforts to place elements of the country’s Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The two organizations, working for this mandate have already received the approval for the funding to nominate the elements of Kittitian and Nevisian culture

The organization has shared that they have started the preparation for nominating the cultural element of the country for UNESCO. The officials have shared that it is a new development and the people of the island should be proud of the development.

The country has received generous funding in order to prepare a dossier for the “Masquerade Traditions of St. Kitts and Nevis” The organization has shared that it is important for the people from different cultures to be proud of their history and traditions.

For the creation of the dossier, the organization has received the funds of USD $9,926. The officials have shared that the UNESCO has supported the country with USD92,000 to complete the National ICH Policy.

The dossier is the next step in the direction of protecting as well as highlighting the unique folklore traditions of the country. The officials have shared that it is important for the people of St Kitts and Nevis have to make sure that the history, traditions and culture of the country remains protected.

The officials have shared that the aim of the project is to make sure that the various elements of culture in St Kitts and Nevis can be protected and nurtured. These elements included masquerades, clowns, bull, actors, moko-jumbies, and other traditional performances.

The Ambassador David Doyle, who serves as the Permanent Representative of St. Kitts and Nevis to UNESCO, Pierre Liburd, Director in the Ministry of Culture and his team, and Nerys Dockery, Secretary General of the UNESCO National Commission and staff have helped make the road to this achievement smooth and plausible.
