Roseau, Dominica: Head of the administration Dr Skerrit says that DLP (Dominica Labour Party) has a clear vision, a clear plan for moving the country forward. During the 70th anniversary celebration, he said that the party celebrates a hundred years of stellar service to the people of this small, but great nation.
He talked about different sectors and the achievements of the Dominica Labour Party over the years. PM Skerrit noted, “Over the past twenty-five years of a Labour Party government, we have witnessed transformative changes that have reshaped the landscape of Dominica and improved the lives of our citizens in a society of shared values. These achievements in an increasingly complex, expensive, risky, challenging, and competitive global environment have honoured the aspiration of our founding mission of the party to seek better lives for the people of Dominica.”
Diversification of Economy
On the front of diversification of economy, PM Skerrit noted that through strategic investments in agriculture, tourism, and small business development, we have built the foundation for a more resilient and inclusive economy.
He said that the introduction of innovative economic assistance programs has empowered thousands of Dominicans, providing them with opportunities for sustainable livelihoods and economic advancement.
“Significantly, we have opened up the country for more productive participation in international trade of goods and services, “said the prime minister.
Douglas Charles Airport
PM Roosevelt Skerrit also talked about the airlift sector which has seen major strides under the leadership of Dominica Labour Party. He said that when this Labour Party came into office in February, the current Douglas Charles Airport now landing daily flights to North America and the Caribbean all hours of day and night.
“But tonight, a seven three seven can land at a Douglas Charles at any time of day or night, ladies and gentlemen. We no longer we no longer take comfort in not having to overnight in Antigua or Barbados. As much as we love Barbados, we no longer have to overnight, prime minister, because labour brought night landing to the people of Dominica,” he added.
PM Skerrit also outlined that the government of Dominica has set sights on flying directly to London on receiving citizens, visitors and businessmen from Toronto and Asia. They are now pursuing air services agreements that would allow them to receive and send flights directly to the motherland of Africa.
Hotels in Dominica
PM Skerrit outlined that Dominica has world class hotels in the North of Dominica, in the South of Dominica, in the West of Dominica, in the East of Dominica, and many more are under construction.
“We are building an international airport with our own money, ladies and gentlemen. We are building a modern marina with our own money, ladies and gentlemen. We are improving and augmenting local tourism attraction sites across Dominica with our own money, ladies and gentlemen. That’s what we are doing,” PM Skerrit noted.
Geothermal Power Plant
On this front, PM Skerrit added that in Dominica, geothermal is fast approaching reality for us in Dominica. Because geothermal for us is hope. Geothermal is sustainable living in these times of great uncertainty.
Job Creation
On the job creation, PM Roosevelt Skerrit commended the private sector for creative opportunities for thousands in Dominica. He said that they have done more for small and medium sized business development in Dominica than any previous administration in our country. But the reality is many of the young men and women leave school, high school or college, and cannot immediately find a job.
“We cannot leave them to the elements. We have a duty to nurture and guide them. Lot to make Dominica attractive for investors. We have a skilled workforce that will be attractive to investors, and we are geopolitically well placed to interest and attract investment partners. But in the interim, what do we do as a government,” said the prime minister.
Small businesses
PM Skerrit added that DLP is well aware of our duty to the young people. To give them hope and opportunities to learn and equip themselves for the life ahead. Accordingly, the Dominican Labour Party government will resist the calls.
“We’ll resist all calls to slam the door in the faces of the NEP workers, ladies and gentlemen. We will not stop subsidizing businesses. We will not stop subsidizing businesses that provide training and mentorship in work ethics to our young people. We are purposefully equipping them for emerging industries with initiatives like a youth entrepreneurship hub and a Dominica youth business trust. I will not give up on young people. I will never give up on young people in Dominica. We are working to expand this economy,” added the prime minister.
Education
PM Skerrit added that it’s not teaching them to be to collaborate, to cooperate, and the world needs more collaboration and cooperation now than ever before, ladies and gentlemen.
PM Skerrit added that the Labour Party has stood as a beacon of hope, love, peace, progress, and prosperity for the beloved nation, Dominica.
