The government played an important role in this record-breaking achievement by making significant investments to modernize fisheries infrastructure, capacity building, and introducing policies to encourage sustainable fishing practices.

Reef and Demersal Fishery

According to the sources, most of the revenue generated was from the Reef and Demersal Fishery, which helped grow the overall economy of the nation. The number of catches increased from 1,157,234 pounds in 2023 to 1,567,620 pounds in 2024. This number represented an increase of 35.4%.

Minister Samal Duggins calls it a strategic achievement

Samal Duggins, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Marine Resources, said that the boost in revenue is a testament of the nation’s commitment to economic development through sustainable fisheries.

He further added that the government of St Kitts and Nevis will continue to work for the benefit of the hardworking citizens and residents of the nation by offering them better opportunities.

Minister Samal Duggins also stated that they will support and assist the fishermen by providing them with resources, training, and infrastructure that will help them thrive and the fisheries sector to grow.

Minister Duggins thanked the Department of Marine Resources for continuously supporting the fisher folk. He also said that the fishermen work very hard to help grow the fisheries sector of the nation.
