Minister Samal Duggins visits local farmers to promote agricultural development and global reach

Samal Duggins, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources, met with local farmers, with an aim of promoting agricultural development and access of local farmers to the international market on Saturday, February 8th, 2025. 

During his visits, Minister Duggins toured several farms, both natural and home-grown, and discussed various ways to advance their products and increase their market share.

He highlighted the government’s commitment in reducing the country’s dependence on foreign products, strengthening the local economy and advancing the agricultural sector.

Diversifying the Economy

Minister Samal Duggins pointed out a diversified economy through the agricultural sector which would be beneficial to the twin island nation. He also promoted naturally grown crops that will benefit the citizens of St Kitts and Nevis with access to less expensive products.

The government continuously works to increase efficiency and productivity in the sector by providing farmers with the necessary training, materials, and technical assistance.

In addition, Minister Duggins also discussed the difficulties created by climate change that affects the agriculture sector and the news for eco-friendly and renewable solutions in order to address its impacts. He emphasized the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices is important to endure the long-term viability of the agriculture sector.

The 25 by 25 Agenda

Minister Samal Duggins cited the CARICOM-led ‘25 by 25 Agenda’. It is an agenda that will reduce the region’s food import bill by 25% by 2025. He met with the operator of the livestock market, Marvin Harrigan to discuss how he may be contributing to this agenda and ways to further support his endeavors.

He adds that the government of St Kitts and Nevis will strive for this requirement through measures like farm visits and training programs.
