The Prime Minister of St Kitts And Nevis, Terrence Drew, attended a meeting with the WIPO representatives on the 9th of November 2023.
The meeting was attended by Daren Tang, Director General of WIPO; Hasan Kleib, Deputy Director General of the regional and National Development Sector; Beatriz Amorim, Head of the Latin American and Caribbean sector; and Carol Simpson, Head of the Caribbean industry.
The meeting was ruled successful and promised significant benefits for the federation of St Kitts and Nevis.
The WIPO Cooperation Agreement aims to outline the responsibility of both WIPO and St Kitts and Nevis in upgrading electronic infrastructure used by the intellectual property of St Kitts and Nevis for processing trade mark applications.
Different topics were covered during the meeting, which was pivotal for the St Kitts Federation. Some critical issues discussed during the conference were enhancing the national intellectual property infrastructure and the copyright framework.
These topics were vital to be included in the discussion because they are expected to pave the way for improved protection of creative and innovative work, contribute to the development and more excellent openings of economic opportunities and create a more favourable environment for authors, content creators and businesses.
In addition, participating in intellectual property and sports pilot projects aims to unlock the potential of the local sports sector, which signifies St Kitts and Nevis’s commitment to fostering innovation and prosperity in various industries.
During the discussion, the Prime Minister highlighted that the ruling party, the Labour Party administration, is geared to ensure that the ministries of small business and entrepreneurship sports and culture are booming.
Finally, the Prime Minister concluded the event with the words, “The collaboration effort with WIPO reflects the government’s dedication to ensuring that the nation remains at the forefront of intellectual property and corporate protection, ultimately contributing to its socio-economic development”, said Dr Terrence Drew.
