Antigua and Barbuda recently concluded their general elections in the early morning of January 19, 2022. The elections were held on January 18. The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party have successfully retained power in the government. ABLP were declared victorious in nine constituencies, while the United Progressive Party’s opposition managed to secure victory in five general assembly seats. Meanwhile, Barbuda People’s Movement secured one seat from the Barbuda Constituency.
This victory has propelled the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party to create the majority government for the third consecutive time.
Prime Minister of The leader of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party, Prime Minister-elect Gaston Browne, has reclaimed victory in his constituency for the third consecutive time. He secured victory at St John’s City West.
The ABLP leader Gaston Browne secured 1295 votes to secure his victory. Meanwhile, the United Progressive Party candidate, T Allister Lincoln Thomas, received 621 votes in the opposition, and Knight received 18 votes in St John’s City West. The constituency saw 14 rejected ballots.
The Labour Party Candidate Sir Robin Yearwood was declared the winner of Philip North Constituency. The winner, Yearwood, received a triumphing 708 votes, while United Progressive Party candidate Browne received 615 votes. As per the statistics, there were a total of 7 rejected ballots.
Trevor Walker of Barbuda People’s Movement secured a landslide victory over the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party candidate Knacyntar Nedd. Walker received 624 votes, while Nedd was defeated with a mere 456 votes in his bucket.
Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin of the Antigua & Barbuda Labour Party won the seat in St John’s City South. Benjamin received 889 votes in the constituency, thus claiming the seats, while his opponents, Defreitas and Timothy, received 495 and 11 votes each. There were six rejected and spoilt ballots.
Additionally, Maria Browne, from Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party, was the declared winner in St. John’s Rural East. She was contesting the elections for the first time, and this was her first electoral victory. Browne received 1770 votes while her UPP opponent, Ivor Bird, claimed 1460 votes.
Meanwhile, E.P. Chet Greene of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party was declared the winner for St. Paul. Greene received 1244 votes while his UPP opponent, Cleon Pauline Athill, got 1101 votes
DNA’s Gameal Joyce managed to secure 29 votes, while there were thirteen rejected ballots in the constituency.
