The UN is celebrating its 75th anniversary year this year under the theme: “The Future We Want; the UN We Need: Reaffirming Our Collective Commitment to Multilateralism”.

This means 75 years of promoting solidarity, peace, human rights and multilateralism and over 40 years of successful partnership with the people and Governments of the Eastern Caribbean and Barbados.

Since its ratification in 1945, the UN has been working towards sustainable development around the globe. Countless programmes which centre on improving citizen security, poverty reduction, promoting climate action and advancing gender equality have been implemented successfully and executed across the Caribbean.

Highlighting the organization’s commitment to cooperation, global solidarity, multilateralism and improving lives, the observance of this year comes at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic is reminding us that we are interconnected, and a resilient and sustainable future can be built only through collaboration.

The UN Secretary-General launched the largest global conversation of the world for fostering solidarity and allowing ordinary persons to have a say in the future which they want to see to commemorate this milestone at the start of this year.

UN Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean staged a number of UN75 dialogues and events this year, aimed at inviting participation, especially from the youth of the region.

Youth were strong in their call for more meaningful youth engagement and digitalization and diversification of regional economies for creating opportunities for youth, increased investment in creative industries, a greater focus on innovation and to put an end to discriminatory practices with laws.

Moreover, they reiterated their faith in the value of multilateralism and the importance of global cooperation.

Didier Trebucq, the UN Resident Coordinator for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, praised the innovation and resourcefulness employed in conducting the celebration this year and also highlighted the ever-important role of the UN, especially at the present time.
