Queen Elizabeth II, the longest reigning Monarch of the United Kingdom and the country’s figurehead for 70 years, has died at the age of 96. She died peacefully at her estate in Balmoral, where the Queen had spent much of her summer, on the afternoon of September 8.
The official confirmation of her passing was given to the media by Buckingham Palace on Thursday.
The Queen’s family, including her Eldest son, were present at the summer estate of the Royal Family, Balmoral when the doctors informed them of (the doctors) concerns over her health. Her grandson, Prince Harry was at the time on his way.
The reign of Queen Elizabeth II, who came to the throne in the year 1952, saw a number of enormous, often unbelievable changes in the society and its structure, such as head of state spanned post-war austerity, the transition of her rule from being an empire to Commonwealth, the end of the Cold War, and the UK’s entry into – and withdrawal from – the European Union.
With the death of the Queen, her eldest son, Charles, the former Prince of Wales, will lead the country through the mourning. Further, he will serve as the next king and head of state for 14 Commonwealth nations. On Friday, The King and his wife, Camilla, who had been declared the next Queen by Elizabeth II, will return to London, Buckingham Palace. The king is also expected to address the United Kingdom on Friday.
Following the death of her majesty, Queen Elizabeth II Buckingham Palace released a statement that stated. “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
King Charles also issued a statement for the general public, in the hour of grief for the United Kingdom, the message stated, “The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.”
At the age of 96, Queen Elizabeth was the only Monarch to have lived through the governments of 15 Prime Ministers. At the start of her term as the Queen, Winston Churchill, born in 1874, was the Prime Minister. Days before her death, The Queen appointed the final Prime Minister of her reign, in the form of Liz Truss, who was born 101 years after Churchill in 1975.
Crowds gathered outside Buckingham Palace, were waiting restlessly for an update on the health of their Queen when the Palace Spokesperson announced the death of the Monarch.
