ESPN Events cancelled the Hawaii and Bahamas bowls on Friday because of the coronavirus pandemic and related travel restrictions.

The games are generally played in December and are two of 17 which are operated and owned by ESPN.

The cancellation brought the total number of postseason major college football games which were tentatively on for this season down to 39.

ESPN Events and ESPN senior vice president of college sports programming, Pete Derzis said that they are disappointed that they could not stage events at these premier destinations this year.

He said that they are committed to bringing both games back in 2021, and he thanked their conference partners, sponsors and the local communities for their ongoing understanding and support.

The California Bay Area-based RedBox Bowl announced previously that it would not be played this season.

College basketball tournaments traditionally held in the Bahamas and Hawaii have also been cancelled for this season.

The Bahamas Bowl matchup this year was decided to be Mid-American Conference teams vs Conference USA.

The Hawaii Bowl was set to host a team from a C-USA team and the Mountain West.
