China has recently announced a relaxation in the Zero Covid Policy. The reason for this sudden relaxation is that the President of China believes that the COVID protocol regulations are hurting China’s economy. The President, Xi Jinping, believes that the policy severely damages and weakens the economy.
Further, the Zero Covid Policy is causing severe economic and social distress. According to the Republic of China’s ruling Communist Party, the distress is likely to fracture the social contract. Thus, the party decided to eliminate the policy.
Following the Covid-19 Outbreak, the President of the Republic of China, Xi Jinping, imposed a lockdown, sealing all the borders and started his “draconian” Zero Covid Policy. As per Nikkei Asia, the world received the Zero Covid Policy in the earlier months of the pandemic. However, by mid-2021, the rest of the world was learning to live with the Covid-19 virus. Meanwhile, China was intent on keeping the No Covid Policy.
Later that year, as more contagious variants of the disease spread, China doubled down on lockdowns. At the time, President Jinping insisted that Beijing was to stay on the track. However, the “Zero Covid Policy.” was not a sustainable option to contain the spread of infections. However, the administration of China insisted on keeping the restrictions. This administration’s decision led to protests erupting in several areas of China. As a result, the administration had to drop the “Zero Covid Policy” in those areas.
The President Xi Jinping’s decision to do away with the policy could be influenced by the need to stop the protests. Further, after the announcement of dropping the procedure. President Xi Jinping has further instructed local government officials to increase their surveillance to monitor the spread of Covid-19 in the areas.
The President has urged several big corporations to boost economic growth by creating job opportunities for the people and promoting exports.
