Basseterre, St Kitts: Government of St Kitts and Nevis signed an agreement with Republic of China (Taiwan) through its Embassy in Basseterre, to launch the Mental Health Service System Enhancement Project on July 31, 2024.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew, also the Minister of Health, signed the agreement with the Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to the Federation, Michael Lin.
This formal agreement is designed to strengthen the services and access to mental wellness care in the Federation.
Prime Minister Drew, through his official Facebook, shared glimpses from the signing ceremony and stated that, “Mental wellness is important especially at this time where a significant percentage of our people need access to mental wellness care to enhance their overall wellbeing.”
Through this significant project, St Kitts and Nevis aims to strengthen the offerings and accessibility of mental health services by reducing the time of early detection and treatment of the mental health disorders such as anxiety, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorders.
PM Drew mentioned that he made a promise to the people that access to mental wellness services would be a significant pillar of the revamped healthcare system.
Mental wellness will get the necessary investment as any other sphere of health, as it is critical in establishing a sustainable island state, added the PM.
Ambassador Michael Lin also stated how his government is very well aware of the connection between the physical and mental health. This, he said, underscores the importance of the public awareness and educational factor of the project.
The Prime Minister said that his administration has already invested in resources that help in addressing mental health and noted that they will continue to do so.
Notably, the project will run for a period of three years until July 2027, and will be implemented between the government of St Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan, through the International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF).
PM Dr Drew also took to his Facebook to extend his gratitude to the Republic of China (Taiwan) who has partnered with St Kitts and Nevis to expand the access to mental wellness care.
