Basseterre, St Kitts: The Government of St Kitts and Nevis hosted a National Consultation on the development of a secure and reliable digital identity authentication system at the National ICT Centre.
This significant Digital Identity Consultation was held on Thursday, August 8, 2024 and aimed at enhancing the country’s digital infrastructure and at improving access to the essential services for all citizens of the country.
Cheryleann Pemberton, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communications, Technology and Posts, emphasised on the significance of this endeavour and how it is a significant step towards the security of the people.
“The digital identity authentication system we are discussing today represents a significant step forward in enhancing our capabilities to verify identities reliably while safeguarding the privacy and security of our citizens,” said Secretary Pemberton.
Gilberto Martins De Almeida, an International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Consultant, underscored the various benefits of investing in digital identity, including e-citizenship, e-government, single window services, enhanced cybersecurity, economic growth, and facilitation of foreign trade.
Cleveland Thomas, ITU Area Representative for the Caribbean also emphasised the significance of this initiative.
He stated that by investing in the digital identity of the country, the citizens are laying a solid foundation for a future where persons can easily access to services that are important. They can also participate fully in the economy, and encourage confidential information to be shared in the digital world.
The consultation process has provided a platform for citizens, experts, and stakeholders to actively participate in shaping the future of digital identity in the twin-island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
In addition to this, PS Pemberton encouraged everyone to share their thoughts candidly and also to engage actively in the discussions, as their perspectives are crucial in shaping a system that is both securely efficient and user-friendly, as well as inclusive.
