St Kitts and Nevis: The Fisheries Department of St Kitts and Nevis is expected to generate over $15 million revenue in 2024 as the ongoing investments is delivering favourable results. Agriculture Minister Samal Duggins shared details and noted that the continued support by the government to drive this sector, continues to give positive results.
Minister Duggins shared the glimpses of the progress of the Fisheries sector and noted that government support drives department of fisheries to record $15 million revenue.
He said that through conversations with the fisherfolk, it became clear that an upgrade to their facilities was important to increase productivity and foster a supportive working environment.
Significantly, with this in mind, the government through the Department of Fisheries & Marine Resources, undertook a major renovation of the fisheries complexes in Basseterre and Old Road. These upgrades included significant structural improvements, a refreshed ambiance, and crucial new equipment, such as the much awaited ice machine in Old Road and a fully functional fish depot.
Sharing the highlights, Minister Samal Duggins highlighted that this transformation has made a positive impact on the profitability and sustainability of this vital industry, with a record-breaking intake of over $15 million last year, which is the highest in the past ten years.
The Agriculture, Fisheries Minister also noted that their dedication to supporting the fisherfolk of St Kitts and Nevis remains strong as the investment continues for the growth and resilience of the Fisheries Sector.
Notably, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Marine Resources has unveiled the calendar of week-long activities to celebrate the upcoming annual World Fisheries Day on November 21st, 2024. The Department has urged the people to join them in celebrating the importance of sustainable fisheries and marine conservation.
