St Kitts and Nevis and the neighbouring island nations experienced seismic activity with a 5.2 Magnitude. The officials have shared that the earthquake was felt in the afternoon hours of the day on Friday.
The epicenter for the earthquake fell just west of Barbados, with shocks felt in several neighbouring island nations. After the social media was full of mentions of the earthquake in the nations that it was felt in.
The epicenter of the earthquake was right in the backyard of St Kitts and Nevis, according to some experts. The magnitude of the earthquake was on the lower side of the scale, however the shocks were felt in several communities.
The epicenter was officially recorded at latitude 17.59n and longitude 62.06w. The epicenter was located approximately 33 kilometres below the Earth’s surface.
The West Indies Seismic Research Centre detected the earthquake at approximately 1: 30 Pm. The officials have confirmed that with respect to the nations, the epicenter was 58 kilometres southeast of Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, 81 kilometres northeast of Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis; and 90 kilometres south-southwest of Brades, Montserrat.
The effect of the earthquake was affecting a comparatively wider area of the Eastern Caribbean. Several Island Nations across the Eastern Caribbean have reported feeling the shocks for hours.
The West Indies Seismic Research Centre has confirmed that this is only the initial data given out by the Automatic Earthquake Location system. The further investigation may give more accurate details.
The department has however confirmed that an earthquake of this magnitude does not often result in any major damages. The seismic shocks often result from the tectonic activity that is constantly ongoing in the Caribbean Sea.
